‎How to tell if RAM or slot is broken?

Why my laptop task manager show 1 of 1 ram slot used but i have 2 ram slot 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 Yes, the 2009 4,1 & 201012 5,1 Mac Pro single Xeons use RAM in adjacent pairs [unlike the old 2008 3,1 which looks like a knitting pattern ramai slot Ok, i tried putting 4 sticks in the slots 2, 3, 4, and 5 wouldn't boot Is this supposed to happen?
